Spray Tan Prep and Aftercare in the Desert

How to prep for an airbrushed Norvell spray tan and keep the bronze even and long-lasting in New Mexico's famously dry desert air.

A spray tan in Albuquerque comes with a plot twist: the same sun-drenched climate that makes a bronze glow feel right at home is also the climate working hardest to fade it. Desert air pulls moisture from your skin around the clock, dry skin sheds faster, and a tan lives in exactly the layer of skin that is doing the shedding. The upshot is simple — in New Mexico, preparation and aftercare are not fussy extras. They are the difference between a tan that fades evenly over many days and one that goes patchy by the weekend.

Our spray tans are custom tans applied by hand with the professional Norvell system — airbrushed and tuned to your skin tone for an even, natural, streak-free bronze that never turns orange. Here is how to set that tan up for success before you arrive, and how to protect it in this climate after you leave.

Before your appointment: give the tan a clean canvas

A spray tan develops on the surface of your skin, so everything about prep comes down to one idea: the smoother and cleaner the surface, the more even the result.

Exfoliate ahead of time. A thorough, gentle full-body exfoliation — ideally the day before, or the morning of — sweeps away the dry, flaky skin the desert produces so reliably. This matters most anywhere skin runs rough: elbows, knees, ankles, heels. Old self-tanner residue should go too, so the new tan starts from zero everywhere.

Shower before, then arrive bare. Come in with clean skin and skip the lotion, oils, deodorant, and makeup afterward — anything sitting on the skin can interfere with how evenly the solution takes. In a climate where moisturizing is a reflex, this is the one morning to hold off; you will be back to lotion soon enough, and with a better result for the pause.

Do your other grooming first. Shaving and waxing belong before tan day, not after — hair removal exfoliates, and doing it right after a tan takes color with it. The same logic applies to nail services: if you are pairing your tan with a fresh set or a pedicure, schedule the nails first so nothing scrubs at newly tanned skin.

Dress for the ride home. Loose, dark clothing and loose shoes are the standard for good reason — snug waistbands and straps can press lines into a developing tan.

At the appointment

The appointment itself is the easy part. Because our tans are airbrushed by hand rather than machine-sprayed in a booth, your tech works with your skin tone and your goal — a subtle warmth or a deep vacation bronze — and adjusts as they go. It is a custom application, which is exactly what keeps the result natural and streak-free. Your tech will also walk you through the timing for your first rinse and anything specific to your tan, so you leave knowing exactly what the next day looks like.

Spray tans are available Tuesday through Saturday, and reserving online ahead of time is the best way to get the day you want — especially before the calendar events that drive tan season here, from spring weddings in the bosque to Fiesta-week photos in October.

After: defending the bronze against the desert

Here is where Albuquerque asks more of you than a humid city would. A tan fades as skin naturally sheds, and dry skin sheds faster and less evenly. Your entire aftercare strategy is therefore one word: moisture.

Moisturize daily — twice daily is better in our climate. A rich, gentle lotion morning and night keeps the tanned layer supple and slows the shed, which is what makes the fade slow and even instead of fast and patchy. This is the single highest-impact habit on this page.

Keep showers short and warm, not long and hot. Hot water and long soaks accelerate exfoliation, and hot tubs and chlorinated pools are notorious tan-shorteners. When you do get wet, pat dry with a towel rather than rubbing — rubbing is just exfoliation with extra steps.

Watch the desert extras. Sweaty foothill hikes, swamp-cooler-dry bedrooms, and our relentless sun all play a role. Moisturize after sweating, consider a humidifier in the bedroom if you run one in winter anyway, and remember that a spray tan provides no sun protection at all — sunscreen is still non-negotiable at this altitude, where the UV index is punishing most of the year.

Skip exfoliants until you are ready to reset. Scrubs, loofahs, and exfoliating acids will take the tan with them — save them for the day the fade is done and you want a clean slate for the next one.

Making it an occasion

A spray tan pairs beautifully with the rest of a get-ready week — many guests book their nail appointment earlier in the week and the tan closest to the event. And if you know someone with a wedding, reunion, or vacation coming, a gift card covers a custom bronze as easily as it covers a pedicure — purchasable online or in the salon.

The desert gives us sunshine nearly year-round; a good spray tan lets your skin look like it enjoyed every day of it, minus the UV. Reserve your Norvell spray tan and come get your glow.
